OTTAWA, Ontario, October 18, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – As Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservative government continue to stifle debate on abortion, a Canadian pro-life group is throwing down the gauntlet against censorship on an issue critical to the future of the country.
The We Want the Debate Campaign, launched Tuesday, is challenging anyone wishing to defend abortion to an open, transparent, and fair debate in front of the people of Ontario.
“We believe that the suppression of any debate in a democratic society is unacceptable,” said Jakki Jeffs, the campaign’s director. “We demand that the current censorship of the debate around abortion be ended, and that an open and informed discussion be held in public.”
“The stifling of the debate over the past decades has prevented all Canadians from having access to the facts, and has left the issue completely ignored,” she continued. “In the coming months we will be addressing this lack of balance, and on the 7th of February 2012 we hope those who wish to defend abortion will join us in finally debating this before the people of Ontario.”

Over the next four months, the campaign will conduct a series of activities to highlight current contradictions and misconceptions that warp the public’s view of abortion. They aim to expose what they call a systematic distortion of the facts regarding abortion by the overwhelming majority of Canada’s media.
They will also denounce Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government over its repeated insistence that it will not allow a debate on abortion in Parliament, which the campaigners say disregards for the will of Canada’s people.
While abortion is currently available and state-funded up until the point of birth in Canada, a poll conducted by Abacus Data in May leading up to the National March for Life showed that 59% of Canadians want at least some restrictions on abortion.
Fifty-two percent of respondents said the country should not fear an open debate on abortion, and only 26% wanted the issue left alone. More than one quarter of Canadians (27%) wanted protection for the unborn from conception onwards.
